Truly Arabian Antiquities!
A beautiful floral decorated pair of ceramic vases / spice vessels.
Likely 19th C, with Arabian provenance.
Each is 5.5" tall, with a 2.5" diameter at the base, 1.25" at the spout, and 4" across the middle.
The decoration is slightly different on each one, and we are told that was to help the merchant discern quickly which spice was in which vessel. Yet, they are clearly a pair - fired in the same lot, decorated by the same artist, crafted in the same moment.
Ivory olive and brown are the core colors, with wonderful crisp pops of color - bright blue, yellow, soft purple and several greens. The pigments to make these colors would have been very rare and valuable in that part of the world, making these even more special.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
My husband has had occasion to travel in the Middle East, and he has brought home some truly unusual antiquities from that fascinating and ancient part of the world. These two were discovered in Abu Dhabi from a recognized dealer and were likely used to transport spices across the Gulf and the ancient Spice Road. Fascinating and unlike any ceramics you are likely to have!
