This is a wonderful example of the practicality of antiques. Since there was no electric lighting, you would need to walk about the house with a lit candle for lighting. The hurricane shade kept the flame from flickering out, which is just such a practical feature you don't see much today. These are beautifully hand cast brass and the shades are delightful. See less
