An antique English art pottery vase with a glittering metallic aventurine glaze from British potter and glaze chemist, Bernard Moore … Read more An antique English art pottery vase with a glittering metallic aventurine glaze from British potter and glaze chemist, Bernard Moore (1850-1935) from Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, dating circa 1905-1915. The vase is decorated in a sophisticated glossy glaze of warm golden-brown tones ranging from mahogany to amber and culminating in a tortoise shell effect at the flaring rim. The glittering aventurine accents of metallic copper with golden flecks creates a dynamic and dimensional surface characteristic of Moore’s technical skill and artistry. The vase is in very good condition with a couple of small glaze skips or grinding flakes/chips around the foot rim. The base bears Bernard Moore’s blue signature mark alongside an old sticker inscribed #74 by hand. The antique vase measures measuring 5.75 in height x 2.88 in. diameter.

At the turn of the 20th century, Moore was an influential figure in the British ceramics industry. He developed highly decorative colored glaze effects, published technical papers, served as president of the North Staffordshire Ceramic Society (which became the English Ceramic Society) and consulted with top British potteries, including Doulton, Wedgwood, and Pilkington’s. His works are including in the collections of the Victoria & Albert and British museums, among others. See less
