Signed by Holthausen underneath … Read more C. 1770 Rare and significant Louis XVI period writing table in palissandre(rosewood) made by Jean Holthausen. Signed by Holthausen underneath as well as an old French retailer paper label. Holthausen was a German immigrant who move to Paris around 1740 and became a JME(Jurande of Master Ebenistes) in 1764. His JME stamp is next to his stamped signature underneath the table. The writing table is pictured in the leading book on French 18th century entitled “Le Mobilier Francois Du XVIII Siecle by Pierre Kjellberg, page 408. It is in excellent condition, retaining its original writing surface, working locks, and cast ormolu mounts. Part of the provenance of the table is that it was sold in Rouen in 1985. Furthermore, it has been more recently owned by an heiress and major collector from New York. Full information will be given to the purchaser. This is an investment grade piece worthy of any serious collection of French antique furniture. See less
