Sometimes called andirons, chenets such as this with a landier basket served two functions: first and foremost, the shapely back leg allowed the wood to be stacked in a fireplace and allowed air circulation to feed the fire. The landier, which in this case consists of an alternating pattern of knots and twists with scrolled offshoots, would have been used to heat food. At the base of each landier is a thick twisted shaft that extends beneath a pair of C-scroll legs, which are also highly wound. The iron has areas with dark brown oxidation, but the black finish is still visually prominent. A wonderful accessory for any fireplace, our richly worked wrought iron chenets from France will add old-world charm to your house. See less
