Karel Appel is known for his playful and modern depictions of various animals. This is signature Appel style where the expressive colors are based on spontaneity and experimentation. Appel (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor, and printmaker. He was a leading member of the CoBrA group of artists which was active in the 1940s and 1950s. CoBrA, was a European avant-garde art group active from 1948 to 1951. The name was coined in 1948 by Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home countries' capital cities: Copenhagen (Co), Brussels (Br), Amsterdam (A). Appel's work is characterized by its use of bright colors and expressive brushwork. His work can be found in major museums around the world. From a private collection.
