A beautiful original antique French butterfly print with hand color published in Paris 1835 by Lucas. Presented matted and framed and ready to hang print size 5.5" x 9" overall framed size 12" x 15". Please view our other prints from the first edition matted and framed the same and can be hung in groupings.
This vibrant entomology engraving is from the first edition of Hippolyte Lucas’s Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres Exotiques. The work was published in Paris in 1835 by Paquet & L. Debure. It featured nearly 400 different species of butterflies. Lucas gained experience in the field of entomology while working as an apprentice for the Zoological laboratory in the Paris Museum of Natural History at the young age of 13. Lucas completed this striking work by the time he was 20 years old. The distinguished artist and engraver, Paquet, contributed to Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres Exotiques as well.
