A highly collectible South Indian dowry box, known as a Netturpetti, handcrafted in Kerala and dating to the mid-20th century. This striking example is constructed from solid teak wood, finished in a rich red-orange lacquer, and adorned with elaborate hand-worked brass mounts and riveted straps.
The distinctive pyramidal form is crowned with a sculptural, flame-like finial, while the façade is centered by an ornate pierced brass lock plate. Each side is further embellished with decorative pierced panels and hand-forged studs, demonstrating the exceptional metalwork traditions of the Malabar region. The hinged lid opens to a spacious interior, originally intended to store a bride’s dowry, jewelry, and treasured heirlooms.
Rooted in the architectural language of Kerala temple forms, this piece reflects both ceremonial significance and refined craftsmanship. The warm patina of the brass hardware, combined with the richly toned teak, lends depth, character, and authenticity.
