Balustrade form decorated in relief on all sides, with a large cartouche on the body depicting a classic Asian landscape complete with clouds, mountains, temples, waterfalls and trees. The chrysanthemum, a symbol of longevity, is featured on the neck as a crest and as tendrils on the sides. The chrysanthemum is one of the Four Gentlemen of Asian Art along with bamboo, orchid and plum blossom. Perhaps the artist who designed this vase was inspired by Tao Yuanming verse “I pluck chrysanthemums under the eastern hedge, And gaze afar towards the southern mountains. The mountain air is fine at the evening of the day and flying birds return together homewards. Within these things there is a hint of Truth, but when I start to tell it, I cannot find the words”.
