Fine extra large antique Japanese watercolor scroll painting depicting Torii Onna (Bird Chasing Woman), wearing knitted hat. Titled: "Bird Chasing". "Torioi" is an event for children (boys) held on January 14th to pray for a good harvest by driving away birds and beasts that harm the fields. Bird Chasing Women, wearing knitted hats and performing stories and songs with shamisen accompaniment (musical instrument), were going from house to house during the Edo period, from New Year's Day to Nanakusa. The scroll is signed by artist in ink. There are three ways to read the sign: "Seihou", "Harumine", and "Harune". It is unclear which reading is correct. Masterfully painted. Stunning details. Watercolor and ink on silk. Beautifully mounted on silk, paper on back. Bone roller. Comes in original signed wooden box. Japan, late Meiji to early Showa Era, circa 1900-1920s. Excellent condition - minor age wear and foxing, clean. This scroll can be trimmed and framed.
