Hand-thrown in stoneware, the vessel features a thick, gently rolled rim and balanced proportions characteristic of 1960s studio ceramics informed by modernist restraint and Japanese-influenced aesthetics.

The matte-to-satin glaze emphasizes material and surface rather than ornament, aligning with the period’s focus on form and tactile quality. Signed to the base “Aoki,” the piece reflects small-batch studio production rather than industrial manufacture.

The bowl form functions equally as a low vase or sculptural object, suitable for shelf or tabletop display within modern interiors.

Provenance details;

A pottery collection discovered in 2024 in a residence in the Santa Cruz Mountains (among the redwoods) included works by Claude Horan, Toshiko Takaezu, and Joseph Hysong, along with multiple pieces signed “Aoki.”

The homeowner was a Japanese American professional gardener and artist of the same generation who lived near San José State University, where Horan and Hysong studied and where the West Coast studio-ceramics community was active.

Given the location, period, and concentration of works, it is plausible that the homeowner personally knew or studied with members of this circle and assembled the collection through direct artistic relationships, including with an artist bearing the surname Aoki.
