Important pair of period Federal cast brass andirons with acorn tops on plinth block bases, cabriole spurred legs and penny feet. Plinths are engraved with sheilded eagles holding clasped arrows and olive branch. Eagles heads are mirror images. 13 stars representing the 13 colonies above each eagle. Back side of plinths have a cross hatch pattern. Brass construction is seamed and iron log holders are peened. Likely manufactured in Philadelphia, Circa 1790.
Andirons of this age were utilitarian items meant for daily use and the condition of these pieces reflect this with marks, scratches, small dings. Brass more recently polished, but not lacquered. Iron log holders more recently blackened.
