We discovered an exquisite linen toile upholstery fabric that was perfect for this small, transitional armchair. The navy and white linen toile is accented by a luxurious navy velvet chenille on the exterior sides and reverse. Our master upholsterer did a beautiful job matching the prints to the scale and size of the chair on both the interior back and seat, as you can see from the photographs. He used the navy fabric for the welt cord piping trim.
We found this chair at an upscale estate sale in southern Virginia. The chair was manufactured by one of the fine furniture companies in nearby North Carolina, and it appears to have been made in the late 1950s. That was the heyday of fine furniture in the United States, when furniture was well crafted to last forever. This chair is certainly no exception. It is sound, sturdy, and strong. It will be around for generations. The chair was in excellent condition when we found it. The woodwork along the arms and the cabriole legs showed a lovely patina with little evidence of use. Only the upholstery showed its age and wear. This smart and elegant chair would work well in an entry hall, living room, study, office or bedroom. The dimensions of the chair take up only a small footprint, and it could easily be placed in a limited space. The chair measures 26 inches wide and 31 inches deep. It is 31.5 inches high at the crest with a seat height of 16.5 inches.
