This pair of Chinese Export Famille Rose porcelain mancerinas dates to the Qianlong period (1736–1795). A mancerina is a large saucer with a central well designed to hold a pierced cup holder, intended to prevent a chocolate cup from spilling. The name "mancerina" derives from the 2nd Marquis of Mancera, the Viceroy of New Spain from 1664 to 1673. After Spanish explorers introduced chocolate to Europe from the New World, it became a prized delicacy reserved for royalty and nobility. The mancerina, along with other specialized vessels, was created to enhance the experience of drinking chocolate in an elegant and luxurious manner.
While some 17th-century examples exist, mancerinas gained particular popularity during the 18th century. We have seen this same molded scallop-shell form and decoration featured in a major international auction house, where it was dated to around 1770. These mancerinas are decorated with pink, turquoise, and iron-red enamels, accented with gilding. One of the dishes bears the label of Elinor Gordon, a renowned expert in Chinese Export porcelain. These mancerinas are of museum quality and serve as excellent conversation pieces. The price is for the pair, with both dishes available.
Measurements: 8 3/4" (22 cm) diameter approximately.
