The platter is stamped LAURIN and inscribed B la R, the signature of François Laurin (French potter, active in Bourg-la-Reine, 1826–1901).

The significant contribution of Laurin's firm to ceramics lies in the invention of painting with colored wet clay on raw earthenware, allowing artists to paint as on a canvas. This technique, often described as "impressionist" due to its quick touch, marked a transition from traditional ceramics to art earthenware. Each piece is unique and bears the signature of the painter, distinguishing it from serial production anonymity.

This museum-quality piece was painted by Ary Gambard (French, 1852-1897).
