British antiquarian Robert Wood (1716-71) discovered the Palmyra ruins during a 1749 to 1751 expedition, in today's Syria. He not only recorded images of the well-preserved classic architecture but also measured and recorded their proportions. This publication greatly influenced 18th century British architects such as Scottish neoclassical architect, interior designer and furniture designer Robert Adam (1728-1792). Plate XLIX, the portico door engraving, was made after a drawing by Giovanni Battista Borra (1713-1770) and Paul (Pierre) Fourdrinier (1698-1758) who engraved the copper plate. Another copy of this engraving is part of The Hermitage State Museum collection where it's described as first printed in Great Britain in 1753. It has ample margins, and comes nicely matted and framed, ready to display. On laid paper, in very good condition with light toning and minor imperfections to frame as shown. S
