This is plate six of seven Liberal Arts engravings after a series of lost paintings by Frans Floris (1519-1570), a prominent Flemish painter of the Northern Renaissance.

Cornelis Cort (c. 1533 - 1578) was a Dutch engraver active during the Netherlandish Renaissance. He studied under the famous Flemish painter and printmaker, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and became one of the leading engravers of his time. He later moved to Antwerp, where he worked with the prominent publisher Hieronymus Cock. Printed on early laid paper with coquille shell watermark (see last photo). This engraving is inscribed in Latin as follows:

Translation: "Geometry is about tracing the distances of places, and how high, long, and wide bodies of things are."

Stamped on the reverse Babcock Bequest and MFA, most likely the 1900 William Perkins Babcock (1826-1899) bequest to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Zoom into photos to appreciate in detail.
