This exceptional early French porcelain jug is decorated with a profuse gilt design in the Neo-Classical/Empire style, centered around a wheat motif. The hand-painted scene on the pitcher depicts a rural couple dancing in a field, capturing the simplicity and charm of country life. The wheat sheafs, symbolize the harvest, abundance, and the deep connection between the land and its people.
The jug's shape is reminiscent of late 18th-century pot à lait pitchers, especially those produced by manufacturers such as La Courtille, with decoration typical of Paris ateliers like that of Charles Halley, a renowned porcelain painter and decorator active until circa 1820. It boasts a classic form with a wide mouth and a capacity of 1 1/2 cups (12 fl. oz.). The underside is unmarked, as early pieces often are.
Outstanding addition to a fine porcelain collection or as a significant gift for someone who appreciates French decorative arts and its history.
Measurements: 7 1/2" tall by 4 1/4" widest point (handle to spout) by 3 1/2" deep approximately.
