The first plate depicts a scene from a vaudeville act, by the same name, first shown in Paris in 1826. The second, a group of hunters at rest. The plates are decorated with black transferware scenes, hand-painted in green, ochre, blue and brown, inscribed in a cartouche, surrounded by a garland of flowers. They are marked on the underside with semi legible impressed LL&M marks. Transferware was first developed in England. English potters brought the technique to France where it reached new heights of perfection. Zoom into photos to appreciate in detail. Louis-Martin Lebeuf (1792-1854) purchased the Creil Montereau faience works in 1840 and was its director until his death. Montereau was a village in north-central France. Price is for the pair.
