This decorative faience plate by St. Clément features a powerful inscription of a famous quote by French Jacobin playwright Nicolas Chamfort: “War to the châteaux, peace to the cottages.” The scene depicts a soldier and a farmer confronting an aristocrat, with a castle ablaze in the background—evoking the turbulent spirit of the post–French Revolution era.
Charming and decorative at first glance, the plate reveals deeper historical and political themes upon closer inspection, making it a true conversation piece. Clearly marked St. Clément on the underside. In very good condition as shown.
