This beautifully hand-colored engraving is a superb example of 18th–early 19th century scientific illustration, both artistically and historically significant.

William Roxburgh (1751–1815), often called the “Father of Indian Botany,” was a Scottish botanist and surgeon who documented numerous plant species during his work on the Indian subcontinent. He commissioned Indian artists to paint specimens at life size, combining scientific accuracy with delicate artistry. These works were later published by the East India Company under the direction of Sir Joseph Banks, between 1795 and 1820.

The plate is inscribed: Curcuma Zerumbet, Roxb.

Original plates and Roxburgh’s manuscript descriptions are now housed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This piece is ready to hang, elegantly presented in a fine gilt wood frame with beaded detail and hand-decorated mat.
