We have seen similar items … Read more A beautiful pair of early French faience square dishes, each signed with the initials "RX." We have seen similar items described as made by Joseph Gaspard Robert, a prominent potter active in Marseille from around 1750 to 1793. Robert’s works often feature finely detailed scenes in the center, as seen on these plates, which depict people, cattle, a dog, and houses set in scenic outdoor landscapes.

The dishes are further decorated with lobed borders painted in puce and yellow in a feathered pattern. The style of decoration bears a strong resemblance to the work of Veuve Perrin, a fellow Marseille potter who influenced Robert’s designs.

These plates would make a fine addition to any faience collection, whether displayed on a wall, in a vaisselière / china cabinet, or as a meaningful gift for a faience enthusiast.
