Its gently concave form was originally designed to rest comfortably against a maid's waist while carrying heavy tea services, combining practical function with remarkable craftsmanship. A comparable English example dating to circa 1860–1870 is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection.

Today, this tray makes a dramatic decorative statement as both an object of art and a conversation piece. Display it upright on an easel on a console, mantel, or sideboard where the iridescent inlay catches the light, or mount it on the wall as an alternative to traditional artwork.
