A classic Tiffany newborn gift of the 19th century, this mother of pearl teether / sterling silver baby rattle & whistle measures about 4 inches long x 1 1/2" wide. The two bells are hallmarked on the back side "STERLING" and one is stamped "TIFFANY & CO". One side of the handle is engraved in block letters, a B.D.W monogram.
Originally from a New York City estate. Knowing the child that this originally belonged to, we can accurately date it to 1886.

- This rattle is in antique condition. One of the bells is missing half of the bottom and the jingle from … moreThis rattle is in antique condition. One of the bells is missing half of the bottom and the jingle from inside it. The mouthpiece appears to be at an angle. We aren't certain if that is original to the design or damage. Two dents are showing on the hollow handle and a few around the mouthpiece. There are many light surface scratches. We have polished most of the tarnish off but there is still some remaining. The rivet that holds the mother of pearl disc in place has broken through the silver on one side causing the disc to be loose (though still attached on one side) and the hole that held the rivet is open. We believe it would be possible for an experienced bench jeweler to repair it. less
