Alfons Borrell (1931-2020) was a renowned Spanish artist known for his unique and minimalist abstract paintings. Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1931, Borrell began his artistic career in the late 1940s by attending the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona, where he studied drawing and painting.
In the 1950s, Borrell became interested in abstract art and began experimenting with geometric forms and colors. He was heavily influenced by the works of the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, whose use of primary colors and simple shapes had a profound impact on Borrell's artistic style.
Throughout his career, Borrell was known for his minimalist approach to painting, often using only a few colors and simple shapes in his compositions. His work has been described as "meditative" and "contemplative," with a strong emphasis on the interplay of color and form.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Borrell's work began to gain recognition both in Spain and internationally. He participated in numerous group exhibitions and was included in several important solo shows, including a retrospective at the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art in 1996.
Borrell continued to work and exhibit his art throughout his life, even after suffering a stroke in the early 2000s that left him partially paralyzed. He passed away on March 10, 2020, at the age of 88.
Today, Borrell is considered one of the most important Spanish artists of the 20th century, known for his contributions to the development of abstract art and his distinctive, minimalist style. His works can be found in major museums and collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.
This is a Joan Prats Gallery poster for Alfons Borrell. The piece is from 1979.
