A very special antique hand colored lithographic plate (#83) of various Mimulus flowers from "The Ladies’ Flower-Garden of Ornamental Perennials by Jane Wells Loudon", originally published in 1843. Loudon lithographs are prized by manuscript collectors and can be found loose or in modern frames. I believe this plate was framed by an enthusiast in the 19th century however.

13" H x 10 5/8" W x 1 1/8" D

Condition:

The visible artwork appears to be in very good antique condition based on my inspection without removing the frame backing. Obviously, it has been cut or folded for the frame, so it is no longer in it's original rectangular state and the inscription on the bottom is not showing. The frame is as follows: Pretty good antique condition with some repaired cracks and noticeable of wear. There is a visible screw protruding through the frame from the back. The wooden frame also shows some dents and dings. The wooden backing has a chunk missing. However, the structural integrity of the frame seems in tact. The glass covering the artwork exhibits a few scratches, is otherwise undamaged. The hanging wire is secure. Please see all photos.

About Jane Loudon:

Jane Wells Loudon (b1807 - d1858) a writer on botanical, horticultural and natural science subjects and a magazine editor active in the 19th century. In 1844 Jane received an award from the Royal Literary Fund. She received a civil list pension of £100 in 1846. Chief among her publications at this stage were her British Wild Flowers (1845), Amateur Gardener's Calendar (1847), the Lady's Country Companion at Home and Abroad (which she edited between 1849 and 1851), The Ladies' Flower-Garden of Ornamental Greenhouse Plants (1848), Tales About Plants (1853) and My Own Garden, Or, The Young Gardener's Year Book (1855).

"In her introduction to this work, Mrs. Loudon (1807-1858) stated her goal to be to create a work that would be useful to ladies interested in flowers and would encourage the study of botany "which has hitherto been too much neglected… I shall take only the most ornamental plants, and I shall not figure any flowers that are common in gardens. My object is to enable any amateur who may find a pretty flower growing in the wild to ascertain its name and some particulars respecting it."
