Own a piece from a unique time in history! Crafted in the Lombardy region of present day Northern Italy, during the French Republic / Empire period (1793-1815) when Napoleonic conquest was at its height and France had expanded its territory into most of Italy and exerted military dominance over much of Europe.
Under Napoleon, Lombardy became the center of the Cisalpine Republic and of the Kingdom of Italy, both of which were puppet states of France's First Empire, with Milan as capital and Napoleon as head of state.
This remarkable antique was born in the
late 18th / early 19th century, executed in Neo-classical inspired Directoire period styling, the detailed marquetry work and borders seen on this commode show the influence of preeminent Lombard marquetry-maker (intarsiatore) and cabinet-maker (ébéniste) Giuseppe Maggiolini (Milan; 1738-1814).
Topped with the original sienna scagliola marble slab, over solid wood case executed in warm rich quilted grain patterns framed by early floral marquetry inlays, mahogany cross-banding and contrasting satinwood and ebony string banding, rising on tapered squared legs. Stamped "Made in France" to case under the marble. circa 1795-1810
