Large Art Deco Earthenware Vase by Max Laueger for German manufacturer Tonworke Kandern. C. 1899.
This is an elongated and exceptionally graceful form with beautiful glazes and colors. Its height gives it a special presence. The vase is decorated with plumed grasses that encircle the piece with stunning yellow and dark red plumes. At the base there is a beautifull section where the bottom of the grasses cross one another in a kind of fretwork.
The base of the vase is stamped and marked. The width at midpoint is 24"; the height is 16”.
A very similar piece is pictured (Fig. 36, p. 43) in Making It Modern: European Ceramics from the Martin Eidelberg Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin (Spring 2025). That piece measures 12 9/16 inch high. The text (pp. 40-41) discusses Lauger's work:.
"In Germany Max Lauger relied on simply forms ornamented with raised slip. His motifs, however abstracted, were identifiable plants and were generally structured in the new dynamic mode ... melding od natural imagery and rhythmic lines."
As an excellent example of Max Lauger's work and a striking piece of Art Deco ceramic artistry this vase would be distinguished addition to a collection of modern European pottery
Condition: light chip at lip and foot. No cracks. Otherwise excellent condition.
