We have two of these … Read more A single tropical hard-wood mortar from Kerala, India, from the early to mid 20th century. We have two of these mortars available in this deep espresso brown color with marvelous lathe markings throughout. One is ever so slightly smaller than the other. This mortar has a wide hole at the top, and could be perfect for a fitted candle or display an oversized candle. The wood is extremely solid and quite substantial in weight. Although Vessel A has a crack in the side, the integrity of the structure is sound. These truly special mortars were hand turned with a lathe from a single block of wood. They have a heaviness and authenticity that seems to be a true rarity in a world full of mass production.
