Fine and rare extra large antique Japanese watercolor scroll painting depicting divine Peacocks by Suiha Shibata. Suiha Shibata (born 1888 in Kyoto), disciple of Shouha Ito, was one of leading female painters in the 1900s in Japan, and has an impressive record of being selected at least eight times for the Imperial Art Institute Exhibition. From around the age of 53, she was allowed to exhibit at exhibitions without her artworks being curated by the organizers. Acquired from an art dealer in Japan who bought it from the former owner of an art museum in Oita Prefecture.
Signed and sealed by the artist in ink. Masterfully painted. Watercolor and ink on paper. Beautifully mounted on silk, paper on back. Bone roller. Excellent condition - minor age wear, few small foxing spots. Comes in original signed wooden box. Japan, late Meiji to early Showa Era, circa 1900-1940s.
