This cabinet is made of a rectangular cabinet sitting on a base connected by four curved legs. Made of red lacquered wood, this cabinet features two doors adorned by a black lacquer frame. Such contrast between red and black lacquer is frequently found in the art tradition of China. The doors open thanks to brass hardware hinges and leaf-shaped pull handles. Inside, the cabinet features a shelf and is painted black. This circa 1850 Chinese red lacquer bedside cabinet with hardware would be an exotic and uncommon storage unit in most homes, perhaps in a bedroom to be used as a bedside table, or in a living room supporting a vase or lamp.
