This Chinese fretwork panel features an unusual intricate bird motif in the center and bat motifs on the exterior. The main part of the panel features a traditionally Chinese round fretwork of a geometric maze. The center of the circle showcases a lace-like pattern of a bird on a flower, perhaps a phoenix which is an auspicious legendary bird in China. The circle is surrounded by decorative bat and dentate motifs in the corners, and the bottom of the panel displays foliages and Chinese circular patterns. This gorgeous panel is an impressive example of the early 20th century Chinese fretwork.
