This lovely lady comes from Burma (now Myanmar) where she was made in the late 19th century. She is hand-carved of teak wood and still carries substantial amounts of her original paint and gold leaf. Possibly a depiction of a temple spirit figure (Nat), her spontaneous and full of life posture while seated on a rounded block showcases the outstanding skills of the artist. She wears a traditional Burmese costume to which incredible attention to detail was paid, particularly the sandals and pearl earrings. This statuette would be an uncommon and handsome decorative item in most homes, especially in a living room where she would not fail to draw attention. See less
