This absolutely stunning, antique, Hippolyte Boulenger jardiniere is decorated in an intricate and delicate Asian motif following the French trend of the time to move towards the exotic styles of Japan and China. The pattern is made up of grey blue swallows in flight and alit atop of aquamarine tree limbs and surrounded by pink cherry blossoms and gold leaves painted over a rich, chocolatey brown, glaze.
Marked: Choisy le Roi and impressed with H.B. & Cie for Hautin & Boulenger & Cie-a remarkable faiencerie from 1860s through the 1890s. The impressed numbers and letters are internal factory codes reflecting clay types and mold numbers. Most of the faiencerie's output consisted of one-of-a-kind, hand-painted, pieces and this gem is just one example.
