A hand-built ceramic vase by Ivo de Santis, through his Gli Etruschi pottery studio. Circa 1970, it is a terrific piece of Italian mid century pottery. The jug form has a rustic, ancient quality. The surface is highly textural and beautifully varied, with areas of high gloss glaze and matte stain. It is both earthy and colorful, with rugged browns and ochres offset by glossy white, blue, and just the slightest hint of bright green. Unmarked. Excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or damage of any kind detected.
Larger size: 10.5 inches tall x 4.25 inches deep x 6 inches wide. It is a very heavy piece, weighing in at roughly 8 pounds.
Ivo de Santis founded the Gli Etruschi pottery studio in the early 1950s in Florence, Italy. De Santis created whimsical, hand built ceramics that were exceptionally popular in the US. His work was exported to the US and distributed by Raymor and Rosenthal Netter. This vase is rather rare; his animals and figural pieces are seen more often.
Gli Etruschi translates as “the Etruscans” in reference to the Etruscan civilization, which was located in Etruria in ancient Italy starting around 900 BC. The Etruscans are renowned for their terracotta sculpture, so it makes sense that de Santis would reflect on this history.
