Large, stunning turn of the century antique Chinoiserie hand made folding wooden 4 panel coromandel screen art. This piece is amazing! It is hand carved with great intricacy in a detailed scene depicting women playing traditional instruments in a beautiful outdoor landscape setting in a lacquered wood. The carved front is in deep rich shades of brown with light beige carvings and the back is a lacquered black. These large heavy panels are connected by metal hardware, allowing them to fold. The screen can be displayed standing or mounted onto a wall. Excellent condition for it's age with appropriate and expected ware. Ultra rare!
Coromandel lacquer is a type of Chinese lacquerware, latterly mainly made for export, so called only in the West because it was shipped to European markets via the Coromandel coast of south-east India, where the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) and its rivals from a number of European powers had bases in the 18th century. The most common type of object made in the style, both for Chinese domestic use and exports was the Coromandel screen, a large folding screen with as many as twelve leaves, coated in black lacquer with large pictures using the kuan cai (literally "incised colors") technique.
