This is just a great original piece. This is one of those prints that came with a collection of prints I recently acquired. I had no idea who the artist was and in doing a lot of research I have not been able to find too much information. His paintings have sold in the past and I have found a few mentions of him including him being in an exhibition of artists in Provincetown in 1948, but surprisingly I have not been able to find an in depth biography. I have included what I have found from a New York Times article below. Based on what I have found, I believe this is most likely a woodcut of a sailing boat from the Caribbean. The coloring is something that you would find down there and far less likely to be found in the Northeast where Kupferman worked. Woodblock on paper measuring 6 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches. The print is trimmed to the image edge and then is loosely mounted to a backing. It is signed and titled in pen just below the image. Print is in excellent as printed condition. Really wonderful coloring and composition. Original matte is then glued down over the mount. Really a very nice presentation and ready for a frame. Matte measures 10 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches.
For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from a New York Times article about one of his exhibitions reads: "Murray Kupferman, a painter who recreates his scuba‐diving explorations on canvas, will show 17 pictures today through July 6 at the Seaman's Church Institute, 15 State Street, opposite Battery Park. The paintings of marine landscapes and undersea life are the result of trips to the Caribbean and Australia's Great Barrier Reefs by Mr. Kupferman, who calls his watery subject “the new frontier.” The artist has exhibited frequently in museums, galleries and schools. In 1967, he was also the only painter invited by former Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller to the conferences on oceanography held here at the Rockefeller Institute. "
