Alex Katz ( b. 1927 ) is an American Modernist artist of a Jewish background born in Brooklyn New York. Katz is one of the most recognized and widely exhibited artists of his generation. Often associated with The Pop Art Movement, he began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time has produced a celebrated body of work with expressive power that includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints.
His earliest work took inspiration from various aspects of Mid-Century American culture and society, and over the past five decades he has established himself as a preeminent painter of Modern Life. The distinctive poetic portraits and lyrical landscapes bear a flattened surface and economy of line. He uses characteristically wide brushstrokes, large swathes of color, and refined compositions creating a new and distinctive type of Realism in American Art that evokes a cool but seductive emotional response.
Since the 1950's Alex Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions worldwide. Artworks by Katz can be found in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In the early 1970's The Hokin gallery became a major exclusive destination for international art collectors. The famous gallery became known for featuring internationally known Modern artists including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Alex Katz, Marc Chagall, and Victor Vasarely among others.
