There has long been a fascination with the weather. The root of that feeling was what philosophers called the sublime, The sublime was a category of art which represented nature at it most terrifying and intimidating.
The category was defined In 1757 by philosopher Edward Burke who set out to display why it was that we should be fascinated by things in pictures that we terrify us if we encountered them in real life.
This painting conveys a sense of that. The sublime, the terrifying is also beautiful.
