The oversized sofa and coordinating lounge chair share the same sculptural bamboo-form framework, bold proportions and elaborate geometric gilt-metal back decoration, creating a highly decorative combination of Asian Modern design and mid-century Hollywood Regency glamour.

Of particular interest, coordinating armchairs and a side table from this same furniture collection have been documented in the marketplace as James Mont style / attributed to James Mont. The sofa appears to be an especially rare form from the collection.

James Mont was one of the most distinctive American designers of the mid-20th century, celebrated for his theatrical interpretation of Asian design and his use of ebonized finishes, bamboo-inspired forms, gilt decoration and strong architectural silhouettes. This suite captures that sophisticated and exuberant aesthetic.

The sofa is particularly impressive in scale at approximately 88 inches wide, creating a dramatic statement piece for a living room, library, sunroom or covered outdoor space. Paired with its coordinating lounge chair, the two pieces offer an unusual opportunity to acquire substantial seating from the same collection.

Offered in their vintage, unrestored condition and ready for restoration and custom upholstery. The sofa requires repair to portions of the woven rattan/cane back as well as replacement or repair of the support webbing beneath the seat. Cushions are not included. This provides the next owner or designer the opportunity to select cushion construction and upholstery appropriate to the intended interior.

The frames retain age-related wear, patina and finish variation consistent with vintage furniture. Please see photographs closely for condition.

While the collection has been associated in the marketplace with James Mont, no maker’s label or documentation confirming manufacture by Mont has been identified on these pieces; accordingly, they are being offered conservatively as in the style of James Mont.
