This petite table … Read more A small round Hollywood Regency gilt sheaf of wheat drink or side table with a glass top. This petite table features a round base with faux bamboo gilt legs. At the center, the gilt gold base features tall pieces of sculptural metal crafted to look like sheaves of wheat. The "spike" (or ear or head as they are called) on the top of each sheaf features beautifully crafted leaf-like pieces.

This highly coveted occasional table was first made classic by Coco Chanel in her 31 Rue Cambon apartment in Paris. This table is nearly identical. Similar pieces have also been created for Yves St. Laurent in the 1970s.

Gabrielle Chanel was a woman of many passions and just as many good-luck charms. The designer was particularly fond of sheaves of wheat—not only because they’re a universal symbol of prosperity, but because they also symbolize harvest time, which coincided with her birth date, August 19. In France, wheat is a symbol of prosperity and wealth. Therefore it would be a wonderful piece to add glamour (and luck!) to any room as a coffee table or side table.
