They are in their original box and have cow horn handles, sterling silver ferrules, and steel blades. It was very common in 19th century France to purchase the knives separately from the remainder of the table setting. The Blades are stamped with the maker's name, "A. Berthier," and the town of manufacture, "Valence". The same information appears on a cloth tag in the lid of the box. The embossed design on the ferrule includes an artichoke, the symbol of hospitality. The knives are in very good as sound condition, there is minor tarnish on some blades. The original box shows some wear inside and out. It was found near Orange. See less
