Wonderfully well preserved cotton 48-Star American was made before 1959 by the Valley Forge Flag Co.There are metal grommets on the ends of the cotton twill border. It is machine stitched throughout.
A little history: In 1912, two stars were added, representing Arizona and New Mexico, bringing the total number of stars to 48, arranged in 6 rows of 8 stars each. There were thirteen stripes representing the thirteen original colonies. The 48-star flag flew from July 4, 1912, to 1959.

This comes from the archives of Deirdre Coughlin, founder of Phoebe’s Closet. She specializes in antique textiles and sold them to many New York City Designers including Ralph Lauren (that’s how I know her,) Charlotte Moss, Martha Stewart, and Schumacher, among many others.
