This pair of albarello form Hispano-Moresque lusterware jars reflects the ceramics type and style of 14-15th century Moor-established Spain. The albarello was a pharmacy jar used for ointments and dried drugs, and the Islamic Moors bright lusterware to the Iberian Peninsula before the 15th century. Lusterware was created as a substitute for metal plates and vessels which were forbidden for use by the Hadith, or Islamic guidelines for life.
These jars are in fair original shape. They show wear consistent with age and use for majolica, a soft ceramic, but there are painted/penned patches over some of the glaze loss.
