Staffordshire Luncheon/Salad/Dessert Plates by George Jones & Sons, Stoke-on-Trent, designed by Horace Overton Jones (son of George Jones), each decorated with a different floral arrangement, stamped "Familiar Flowers, H.O.J.", and impressed with George Jones & Sons factory mark on their undersides, painted "7729". The edges are elegantly scalloped gilt rims on bright cream forms decorated with various floral sprays and foliage accompanied by bumble bees and they each measure 8.75" in diameter.

Miscellaneous Notes: This plate may date back to the end of the last decade of the 19th Century. Researching the internet, this pattern is associated with this timeframe in every listing. Horace Overton-Jones was a British artist who was born in 1856, died in 1922, hence the 1890s date attributed appears to be plausible.

Of note: These plates have a special provenance as it was a set once owned by Helen B. Sioussat (1902 - 1995), a former neighbor in Washington, DC. Ms. Sioussat was a pioneer in boradcast history as the first female network executive, and was the Director of Talks and Public Affairs for CBS radio from 1937 to 1958, as well as hosting the first roundtable talk-show program from 1941 to 1943, interviewing prominent people such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Alfred Hitchcock. She had been Edward R. Murrow's assistant since the 1930s, and produced many of his more popular radio broadcasts. One of their true crime radio shows was considered so important that the F B I.'s J. Edgar Hoover gave her an office next to his to have access to crime news as it broke. While Murrow was in London reporting on the outbreak of World War 2 in the early 1940s, he relied upon Ms. Sioussat to run CBS on his behalf. Our entire childhood was marked by visits to this neighbor, who kept watch on our comings and goings from her first floor apartment. We are selling 11 of a 12 piece set. The 12th plate was broken but she had it professionally restored before bequeathing them to our mother. They have remained boxed and stored for the past 32 years. Please let us know if you want the 12th plate included, we don't recommend that it be used - the 11 plates we are selling are in good condition. less
