This beauty is reminiscent of a type of upholstered footstool that was all the rage in the early 20th-century. This one is handcrafted from what we believe to be mahogany wood finished in a rich fruitwood hue stain. The well cushioned octagonal shaped top is covered in a thick upholstery textile done in an elegant medallion and shells motif in rich jewel-tone colors of burgundy wine, royal blue, subdued gold and sage undertones with a burgundy-tone French gimp braid all around. The footless petite cabriole legs are tucked under the routered octagonal apron. I’ve placed felt pads on the underside of each leg to allow the footstool to glide effortlessly and to protect solid floor surfaces. This beauty measures 12” x 17” x 13” H/W/D; weight 8 lbs. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across the grain with age so you will find there are age-appropriate tension cracks on both sides within the apron (see photo 8 & 11) that do not affect the integrity of the footstool nor detract from its beauty or overall utility. The upholstery is in excellent condition, as well. We believe this to be of French origin but there is no makers mark or label to confirm this. It was made sometime in the 1940s.
