This " Portrait : The Photographs of George Platt Lynes 1927 - 1955 " rare vintage 1994 limited first edition photogravure print collector's large hardcover photography book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your collection.
The hardcover book with indigo ink blue linen covered boards, embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by Twin palms Publishers New Mexico, printed and bound in Tokyo Japan in 1994. It features a monograph survey collection of the portrait photography works of George Platt Lynes, with a foreword by writer, cultural figure and co-founder of New York City Ballet Lincoln Kirstein.
This 1st edition volume is limited to five thousand copies. It is hand numbered 1/5000 in pencil on the inside front end paper page. The photographs are reproduced using sheet-fed gravure method on premium uncoated matte finish paper stock. Book design by Jack Woody.
George Platt Lynes ( 1907 - 1955 ) was an American photographer who worked in the 1930's - 1950's. He is recognized today as a master of 20th Century photography, influencing such artists as Robert Mapplethorpe and Herb Ritts. Though Lynes was commercially successful in fashion and portrait photography for his highly stylized images, his practice is largely characterized today by his remarkable groundbreaking photographs of male nudes. Using inventive creative techniques within his carefully staged studio settings, he visually translated both the physical and psychological nuances of his subjects.
Before his death in 1955, George Platt Lynes began editing his work for a book of portraits. The book never transpired, and Lynes bitterly complained to friends about how unimaginative publishers were. " Portrait 1927 - 1955 " presents an impressive body of his oeuvre - from early work in Paris to his final New York City sittings. Tennessee Williams, Colette, Andre Gide, Gertrude Stein, edith Sitwell, Isamu Noguchi, Martha Graham, Katharine Hepburn, W.H. Auden, Paul Cadmus, Igor Stravinsky, E.M. Forster, William Inge, Burt Lancaster, and T.S. Eliot are among those included. Many rarely seen portraits, including several revealing self-portraits, are reproduced here for the first time in large-format sheet-fed gravures.
For more than forty years, Twin Palms Publishers and Twelvetrees Press have produced some of the finest art and photography books available. Beautifully designed and printed, these books are known for their challenging and provocative content, and for their sheer beauty as objects.
The rare out of print limited 1st edition large format hardcover photography book measures 11 1/2" W X 14 1/4" H X 7/8" D, with 146 pages. It features 114 photogravure print illustrations, artist chronology, and selected bibliography.
