AMERICAN FEDERAL INLAID-MAHOGANY LOLLING "MARTHA WASHINGTON" ARMCHAIR
Massachusetts, ca. 1780-1800 | purchased from Bernard and S. Dean Levy, Inc. of New York in 1966
Item # 401JNI25P
An incredibly fine American Hepplewhite lolling chair from the Federal period, this exquisite chair features a dense-grained mahogany for all primary surfaces that has become silky and positively glows through an underlying patina.
Known as a "Martha Washington Chair", this particular chair was formerly with Bernard and S. Dean Levy of New York where it was purchased from in 1966. Note the exquisite inlays and the way they compliment the swirling curvature of the arms - these curve outward to allow the sitter perfect comfort and the stringer inlays disappear as they reach the swell of the arm. The chair back is designed with a gentle backward cant for comfort and exhibits a dramatic oxbow curvature.
An exquisite acquisition.
