An engraving on laid paper by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger (Dutch, ca. 1594–1670).
‘Ascanius in the Trojan Camp,' 1612 from a series titled "Speculum Aeneidis Virgilianae" or translated "A mirror of the Virgil's Aeneid"
In the etching, Ascanius, the son of Aeneas, fights for the Trojan camp, which is besieged by Turnus. In the background on the right are the Trojan ships set on fire by Turnus.
Turnus is the primary antagonist of Aeneas in the epic poem "Aeneid."
In the lower margin a four-line caption, in two columns, in Latin:
"In teucors turnus monitu iunonis iniquce.
pugnat, et iliacas opprimit.
Quce nymphre vt fiunt, mox troia fortib, ausis
castra capit: captis protimus exsuitur."
Very roughly translated to:
"He turns against the Trojans, at the iniquitous warning of Juno.
He fights and overwhelms the iliacs.
As is done by this nymph, soon Troy, with its brave and daring men, takes the camp: after being captured, it is immediately stripped."
