Roman numerals and an initial “H” hint at the unknown owner of this horse. The castle tower in the background gives further context to the importance of the subject to the person who commissioned the portrait. Signed and dated by the English artist: “J. (John) Barwick, 185?”- last date number is covered by the frame edge. Old art gallery label is affixed to the frame from Thomas Morrod, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
